April 5, 1994

If you die you're completely happy and your soul somewhere lives on. I'm not afraid of dying. Total peace after death, becoming someone else is the best hope I've got.

You may have heard that yesterday, April 5, 2011, marked the 17th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death.

I'm not going to recount Cobain's death and I'm not going to write a biography - you can read that here if you wish. I'm not going to discuss whether or not Courtney Love killed him or not either. All I'm going to do is share with you some of the Kurt Cobain facts I stumbled upon here, post a sweet video, and rock out to the Live in New York unplugged album all afternoon.

  • In grade school, he was the only student that was willing to pose with a bear cub that was there for show-and-tell.
  • In middle school, he played drums in band. His director considered him a pretty average musician - not the best, but certainly not the worst either.
  • When he was 14, he told a classmate that he was going to be a superstar musician, get rich and famous, kill himself and go out in a blaze of glory like Jimi Hendrix (though neither Cobain or his classmate realized Hendrix death wasn't a suicide).
  • Cobain and a classmate discovered the body of a student that had hanged himself outside of the elementary school. There were also several suicides within Cobain's family.
  • One of his favorite foods was Kraft-brand macaroni and cheese.
  • When Nirvana released their first single, he took it to a college radio station, then sat in his car listening to the radio all day to hear it. When he didn't hear it immediately, he found a pay phone, called in and requested it himself.
  • Apparently, he drove like a little old lady, so the band would rarely let him drive the van on tours.
